What is the Initial Competency Assessment and why is it important?

The Initial Competency Assessment is an evaluation of your behavior-analytic skills and understanding that focuses on the five main areas of practice: Measurement, Assessment, Skill Acquisition, Behavior Reduction, Professionalism and Ethics. It is administered by a BCBA or BCaBA who is actively certified and has completed an 8-hour supervision training. You will also receive ongoing feedback as you navigate through the Initial Competency Assessment to optimize your chance of success and mastery. Each part of the Initial Competency Assessment will be performed with a client, through interview, or through roleplay. It is one of the necessary steps that must be done prior to completing the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Application. Wonderkids employs BCBAs and BCaBAs who have worked within the field for over 5 years and are in full compliance with certification, ethics, and assessment standards of practice. If you have any questions regarding the process, our services or how to proceed, please contact us and we will schedule a brief consultation.

What is the purpose of Supervision and the Supervisory Attestation?

The Supervisory Attestation, which is done by a BCBA or BCaBA is meant to classify the applicant individual as having passed the 40-hour RBT course and a preliminary background check. It is one of the required steps prior to completing the RBT Application. Wonderkids offers supervisors across a variety of schedules, who speak both Spanish and English. Ongoing Supervision is a pivotal piece of the role of an RBT. An RBT may not practice without an active supervisor (BCaBA or BCBA). To remain in full compliance with the RBT Ethics Code, you must be supervised for 5% of all your behavior analytic hours worked with a client. Wonderkids offers a variety of Supervision packages that are catered to your individual needs and journey within the field.

What important documentation should be gathered prior to application for the RBT application?

To fully complete the RBT application, you will need to hold a high school diploma or GED (If it is not from the U.S, then it must be translated), their 40-hour course completed (the course should last more than 5 days but be completed in less than 180 days to be valid). A copy of their background check from the local police station. The final steps of the RBT Application known as the Initial Competency Assessment and Supervisory Attestation (see above), are offered by Wonderkids with full compliance with new 2024 standards of ethics and assessment.

How should I prepare for the Initial Competency Assessment?

You should prepare for the Competency Assessment by first reviewing the checklist in the RBT Resources below. You will be interviewed or asked to model each of the 20 Task list items. The Initial Competency Assessment should be regarded as an opportunity to grow, and thus you will be given feedback by the analyst that is administering the assessment. You will receive the signed and dated copy of the Initial Competency Assessment within 24 hours of your meeting with one of our staff. Please keep in mind that the Initial Competency Assessment must be uploaded to the board within 90 days of the date printed on the document or it will expire. If this were to happen, please reach out to us through the Contact Us form for assistance.

What is the purpose and structure of supervisory meetings?

Supervisory meetings are structured and catered to your individual needs as RBT candidates. In these meetings, you will be able to ask questions pertaining to the exam (how questions are structured, good resources to study), prospective companies, what next steps should be taken upon certification, among other topics that may surface along your journey to certification. These meetings span an hour and are held in a cohort of 1-5 people at a time on a biweekly schedule.

What should I expect from the RBT Exam Prep Course Sequence?

The Exam Prep Course Sequence follows the RBT Task list 2nd edition table of contents. It is comprised of 8 meetings (2 per week), spanning 4 total weeks. In these meetings, you will be given access to study material designed and actively updated by Wonderkids. You will also have access to one of our Wonderkids instructors who will be able to answer and clarify any concerns you may have regarding behavior analytic content. This course, independent of the RBT Task list, will also cover how to write Session Notes. Session Notes are a pivotal part of our service as ABA providers and are needed to render billing services. The Exam Prep Course is catered to your needs, and thus may be taken in English and Spanish dependent on your preference and the availability of our staff. If you have any questions, please use the Contact Us form or text us directly at the number below.

Will Wonderkids upload my documents to the BACB on my behalf?

Due to standards set forth by the BACB, Wonderkids will not directly upload any of your documentation to your BACB portal. You may ask us to provide a short Youtube video in the language of your preference to serve as a visual aid while you fill out the RBT application. This is to protect your private information as well as remain fully compliant with BACB standards. After your time at Wonderkids Academy, you will have all the necessary documentation to fully complete and submit your application. If you were to have any questions or concerns during the application process, please do not hesitate to reach out to our staff as we will be more than happy to assist you.

I have an offense on my background check. How should I proceed?

In the case that you do have an offense during a background record review, reach out to us and do not let it hinder your hopes to becoming a Registered Behavior Technician. The BACB allows for "self-reporting" for a Prior History Review by their Ethics Department. This process will require that you submit documentation pertaining to your offense, and they will provide you with an answer as to whether or not you may proceed with your RBT application. Please keep in mind that being cleared by the BACB to take the RBT exam clears you retroactive to the submission of the application, and thus incurring any further offenses will lead to revocation of the right to test and/or practice. Wonderkids is not responsible for subsequent revocation, disbarment, or denial of application if these circumstances occur outside of our supervisory jurisdiction or if applicant did not adhere to the terms and professional recommendations of Wonderkids staff.
